Historical Romance Cookie Hop

There’s nothing like chocolate chip cookies to make the season bright! Warm from the oven. Chewy. Sweet. Melting in your mouth. For a more complex flavor and a kick of
Christmas color, I like to add fresh cranberries!
 

CAMPBELL’S CHOCOLATE CHIP CRANBERRY CHRISTMAS COOKIES

(aka C6 Cookies)

 

 

INGREDIENTS:

2-1/4 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup salted butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 cup roughly chopped walnuts
2 cups fresh cranberries, snipped in half with scissors

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 375°.
2. In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.
3. In large bowl, cream butter, sugars, and vanilla, then add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
4. Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture, beating well.
5. Stir in morsels, nuts, and cranberries.
6. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets.
7. Bake for 9-11 minutes. (I underbake for best results!)

Did You Know?
The magical power of mistletoe has its roots in the ancient world.
 
Among the Celts, mistletoe was revered because it grew during the Winter Solstice in the sacred oak tree and was able to bloom during the dark, harsh winter. It was seen as a symbol of life, luck, and fertility.
 
According to accounts of Pliny the Elder, on the sixth night after a full moon, Celtic druids clad in white robes would climb a sacred oak to harvest the mistletoe with a golden sickle, just before sacrificing two white bulls. It was believed a drink made of mistletoe would counteract poison and grant fruitfulness.
 
 
In Viking legend, after Frigga casts a spell to prevent Baldur from being killed by any weapon grown in the earth, clever Loki crafts a spear out of mistletoe, which has no earthly roots, to do the deed.
 
So where did the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe at Christmas begin? Apparently, it was an invention of 18th century England. One was supposed to remove a mistletoe berry for each kiss bestowed until they were all gone. But how the tradition began is a mystery!
